A good icebreaker question has three properties: anyone can answer it in under thirty seconds, there's no wrong answer, and the answer tells you something real. Most lists fail on the third one ("what's your favourite colour?" tells you nothing). Here are 100 that pass all three, sorted by the room you're standing in.

Why a good icebreaker works — and when a game beats one
The point of an icebreaker isn't the answer; it's the permission. Group researchers describe new groups as passing through a brief, awkward "forming" stage (Bruce Tuckman's well-known model of how teams develop) before people relax enough to actually talk, and a low-stakes question everyone can answer is the quickest way through it. What you're really building is what psychologists call psychological safety — the quiet confidence that you can speak up without being judged. One shared, no-wrong-answer question is a tiny safe risk, and watching it go fine for everyone is what lowers the guard.
There's a useful limit, though. Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan (Depping and colleagues) ran a head-to-head test of get-to-know-you questions against a short cooperative game and found the game built more trust between strangers — because a game adds genuine interdependence and a little shared risk, not just disclosure. The lesson for a host: open with a question to warm the room, but if you want a group to truly click, move to something they have to do together. That's the whole arc of this site — start here, then graduate to a round of charades or a group game.
How to use them well
Three rules from people who run a lot of rooms. Answer first. Whoever asks goes first — it sets the depth and proves it's safe. Match the room. Quickfire questions die in serious settings, and deep questions die at loud parties; pick the section that fits. One is enough. An icebreaker is a doorway, not the building — when conversation starts flowing, let the list go.
Want the game to run itself? Let chance pick who answers with the name picker, escalate to Never Have I Ever or Truth or Dare once the room warms up, or hand the choosing to a spin of the wheel. More group fuel: 72 would-you-rather questions and our phone-only party games.
